Mistygaze

Appearance: Not too much to look at, Mistygaze and most of her kits share a similar appearance. Gray fur blankets this petite she-cat, streaked through with darker tabby stripes. Her fur is the color of ash or cinders except for on her chest, insides of her legs and belly. On these spots, her fur lightens to the very palest shade of grey, the color that Cloudypelt favors. On her belly where the fur is lightest, dark gray dapples cover her underbelly. Other than that, there isn't much to her fur. Unlike her kits, she favors shorter fur. If anyone cared to look hard enough they would remember Badgertail had short fur as well, so the longer fur her kits have makes no sense. Mistygaze likes it though, their long fur reminds her of Sootstorm, even if that is the only feature they got from him. Neither short nor tall, Mistygaze is average in every way. Her body frame is a bit narrow but other than that she is as normal as it is possible to get, except for her eyes. Stunning blue eyes run through her family but stopped dead on Mistygaze. Without the cataracts that ruin her vision, she would have had light blue eyes but thanks to the cataracts they are faded out completely to milky blue-white. Because of them, others find her gaze uncomfortable and disconcerting.
Personality: Maybe due to her lack of vision, Mistygaze has always been a bit odd. She preceptives things differently than other cats and has a totally different understanding of the world around her. This trait is something she tried to pass on to her kits, to look at the world through different eyes and see things in their own way. A loving cat to the last, Mistygaze adores her kits and keeps them close to her. Many mothers lose track of their kits once they become apprentices or warriors, not Mistygaze. She regularly visits her children and speaks with them often. She's proud of them for remaining a close family when there are such trials amidst the clans. Charitable and kind, Mistygaze is an open ear to anyone wishing to vent. She is a gentle smile, soft words and a little subtle humor on a cloudy day. More than once, Mistygaze has helped a new mother nurse a litter when there are too many kits and has taken in kits that are without a mother. She is simply that loving of kits. She laments her inability to carry more of her own, but knows it's too dangerous and knows for a fact Palestar would never let her. The risk of more blind cats is simply too high. Mistygaze is a she-cat that sees past clan lines, often ignoring borders or treating other clan cats exactly like she treats her clanmates. When she was an apprentice, this used to get her into quite a bit of trouble though she regularly attends gatherings because her capability for making peace and mingling is seen as helpful for ReedClan if she can give them good information. Mistygaze believes the whole thing is silly. She frowns on StarClan's laws, though somewhat subtly and somewhat loudly at the same time. She even frowns on female leaders and medicine cats of any gender not being able to have kits. This however, stems from her own deep rooted love for her kits and she believes there is nothing more valuable.
History: Born blind, Mistykit was the victiam of unlucky genes. On both sides of her family there are blind cats, some blind from birth and some that loose their eyesight as they age. Mistykit was one born blind. Her mother Silverbird loved her anyway and her father Ashclaw was determined that she'd become something worth while for the clan. Mistykit however, was unbothered by her low status. Her sisters Sorrelkit, Morningkit and Rainkit helped her learn how to adapt and move around and encouraged her when she got to feeling down. Refusing the path of a medicine cat, at six moons old Mistypaw became the apprentice of Hailpelt. From the start training was hard. She adapted to hunting but fighting was a total loss on this poor she-cat. Around twelve moons old, Mistypaw took an accidental tumble into a pond near the NightClan border. She was pulled out by a tom named Sootstorm, a young warrior. At first she was outraged that she had to be saved by NightClan scum and stormed off. After a minute though, she felt bad and went back to thank him. They struck up a friendship and for weeks after, would meet at that pond.
After her tumble though, the clan leader shook his head and declared that Mistypaw would never be a true warrior. When she was fourteen moons old, he named her Mistygaze and did something rather unusual that in the end worked out for Mistygaze, he made her a nursery cat. She was to help other cats with their kits and, if she chose, have her own kits. Mistygaze accepted this in good grace because several moons later, she bore a litter of kits into the clan. A good friend in the clan defended Mistygaze from the new laws that sought to take her three kits. His name was Badgertail and he did more for Mistygaze than anyone could ever expect. The kits were named Thrushkit, Featherkit and Streakedkit. Badgertail was the one to inform Mistygaze that Featherkit and Thrushkit were blind. Distressed and thinking the clan would do them harm because she'd already broken the law and they only needed an excuse, Mistygaze sent Badgertail to the NightClan border. There he told Sootstorm of the kits. It was arranged for Sootstorm to take them into NightClan. Mistygaze and Badgertail told ReedClan the kits had drowned in a creek, exploring when Mistygaze was asleep. The clan felt it was justice for Mistygaze breaking the law and let it go.
Several moons later, Mistygaze was pregnant again. This time the clan was outraged, suspecting her of having half-clan kits. Badgertail told them again and again that it was him. When asked why they wouldn't just follow the law, Mistygaze said with a straight face that she knew the leader would never let her breed with the cat she loved because he was a strong cat that would produce strong kits and the clan didn't want more blind cats. This time though, four kits were born and none of them were blind. The clan was forced to let it go, though they did it poorly. It wasn't until Badgertail died fighting a NightClan cat and they saw Mistygaze actively mourning him like a lover that they accepted her kits as full ReedClan. Today though, there are still whispers. Mistygaze named her kits Cloudykit, Nimblekit, Ripplekit and Moonkit with the help of another queen since names she would have given would have had nothing to do with the kits since she couldn't see them.
To this day, Mistygaze laments the loss of her mate and her friend, knowing she'll never find someone as kind as Badgertail but also knowing she'll likely never get to see Sootstorm again. She knows it would be dangerous but someday she hopes to come in contact with her NightClan kits. Fear for their safety keeps her away, from Sootstorm, from Fogeyes, from Splashfur and form Blueheart. Though always wise and a bit eccentric for the clan, Mistygaze is always sad for the half of her family that she lost and feels sad that her ReedClan kits can never know they have siblings and a father in NightClan.
